Die Beiträge bilden den überarbeiteten „Final Report" des internationalen Forschungsprojektes ECOMAN (Environmental Conflict Management). Der Fokus des Projektes liegt auf der Theorie und Praxis des Umweltkonfliktmanagements am Horn von Afrika: „It adopts mainly a transformatory approach using process-oriented and interactive problem solving methods" (9). Die empirischen Studien, die in Eritrea, Äthiopien, im Sudan und in Somalia durchgeführt wurden, konzentrieren sich auf vier Themengebiete: Umweltschutz und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit; das Management von Konflikten, die aus konkurrierenden Ansprüchen auf Land und damit verbundene natürliche Ressourcen entstehen; Wasserrechtsvereinbarungen und -konflikte und deren Lösung sowie traditionelle Konfliktlösungssysteme und ihre Mechanismen in Verbindung mit Umweltproblemen am Horn von Afrika.
